Lyme Disease Can Be Prevented With New Shot

****This one caught my eye right away**** New study suggests there might be a way to prevent Lyme disease. Can it really be true? I am going to keep my eye on this one. Lyme Disease Can Be Prevented With New Shot, Study Suggests
ScienceDaily (Mar. 20, 2008) — Lyme disease is the blight of countryside users but it may be prevented with a single injection, according to research published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology.

The US saw nearly 20,000 cases of Lyme disease in 2006 and there are up to 2,000 cases a year in the UK, a figure that is increasing steadily. Now scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Fort Collins, Colorado, USA, have developed an injection that protects against two severe diseases transmitted by tick bites: Lyme disease and Anaplasmosis.

"Along the North-eastern seaboard of the US, ticks are often co-infected with the bacteria that cause Lyme disease and Anaplasmosis," says Dr Nordin Zeidner. "Currently there is no vaccine to protect against either organism. We have shown that a single injection of sustained-release antibiotics can prevent both diseases in mice."

A single dose of doxycycline given orally is only 20-30% effective at preventing these diseases in mice. The researchers found that a new formulation of doxycycline hyclate that is programmed to release the drug over a 20 day period is 100% effective.

"The underlying copolymer formulation has been in use for over 20 years. It has no adverse effect on humans and it can be programmed to release a drug over several weeks to several months," says Dr Zeidner. "We plan to test the doxycycline formulation to develop different release kinetics and delivery methods. For example, a slow release patch could be used in conjunction with current recommended protection against ticks, such as repellents and personal tick checks."

Dear Congressman or Congresswoman __________:

I am writing to ask you to support HR 741, the Lyme and Tick-borne
Disease Prevention, Education, and Research Act of 2007. It is a
companion bill to S 1708

HR 741 recognizes Lyme disease as a serious and debilitating illness,
often misdiagnosed and under-reported. The CDC admits that only 10
percent of cases are reported. A Georgia study found that only one case
in FORTY is reported. In 2005, the CDC reported 23,305 cases. This means
that at least 233,050 cases occurred and probably more than 40 times
that many, or 932,200 cases. That does not count thousands of cases
never reported at all – cases misdiagnosed as MS, ALS, juvenile
rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and many others,
and cases undiagnosed because of the insensitivity of the tests (which
miss almost half the cases). Tickborne diseases are costing this country
billions a year but most of the epidemic is hidden because of misdiagnosis.

People who are not diagnosed and treated properly become chronically ill
and are as disabled as people with congestive heart disease.

HR 741 establishes a Tick-Borne Diseases Advisory Committee and calls
for improvements in three broad categories – diagnostic tests,
surveillance; prevention – and for clinical outcomes research. The bill
authorizes an additional $100 million over five years to accomplish
these activities.

Please ask Chairman Pallone for a hearing on HR 741. Lyme disease is a
nationwide health problem that needs and deserves serious efforts to
contain it and prevent it. Over 90 Lyme disease patient groups support
this bill.

Spring Cleaning Helps Prevent Lyme

Hi everyone,
Since it is March the 1st today and Spring is around the corner I thought this article from the Lyme Disease Research Database would be informative and helpful for everyone to consider especially in the Lyme areas around the country. I would also recommend this cleanup for most areas where a tick might be lurking, because they are showing up in some strange places where they are not suppose to be. Believe me, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" in this case. I would do anything in my power to prevent anyone from getting this dreadful disease.

'Spring' and 'cleaning' are two concepts that fit together just right. Ticks that carry Lyme disease do not like clean spaces. Thoroughly cleaning both indoors and outdoors around your house or property can help you feel more protected against ticks. Wild animals are potential carriers of ticks and Lyme. Mice, skunks, squirrels, opossums, feral cats and dogs who roam around looking for a snug hideaway in the cold may squeeze through crawl spaces in your attic or basement.

With the vernal equinox now three weeks away, it's time to bring out the buckets and brooms. While you're sprucing up, keep the following three steps in Lyme prevention in mind.

* Deny access to host critters. Replace torn screens on vents and windows. Plug holes in walls with caulk or concrete. Reduce the gap in doorway thresholds.



* Sanitize your indoor space. Clean floors and carpets, thoroughly clean area rugs and upholstered furniture. Toss out infested pet bedding.



* Clean up your outdoors space. Remove all debris such as leaf and wood piles. Steam or vacuum spider nests.


Peppermint soap is reported to be a strong natural insect repellent. Use it in your daily shower and also while cleaning up your pet's bedding. While cleaning outdoors, always wear protective clothing and take extra precautions against the creatures, such as snakes and insects, that you may stir up.
